Royal wedding in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
On October 19 and 20 , 2012 Luxembourg hosted a Royal Wedding. Grand Duke Henri’s son, 30 year old Crown Prince Guillaume, married the 28 year old Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, from Belgium.
The civil wedding ceremony took place in the afternoon at the Hotel de Ville, just a couple of hundred meters from the Grand Ducal palace, which was followed by a gala banquet at the palace the same evening. On Saturday morning, the religious wedding ceremony took place in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame of Luxembourg.
The guest list included family of both the bride and the groom, including Crown Prince Guillaume´s 91 year old grandfather Grand Duke Jean. Among the foreign guests were reigning monarchs and heirs from Europe and other continents, including kings, queens, princes and princesses from England, Belgium, Norway, Liechtenstein, Sweden, Denmark, Morocco, Denmark, Austria, The Netherlands and Japan.
Giant television screens were installed in the Luxembourg city center to make sure the public did not miss out on the occasion and to provide a grandstand view. The newly-married couple undertook a walkabout following the ceremonies and also appeared on the balcony of the palace.
On Saturday night, until very late hours, the city came alive with live concerts open to public and firework displays to celebrate the special occasion.
