Published Monday July 06 2015

The Luxembourg Embassy in Ankara held a concert and reception at Ankara Palas, on the 1st of July, to celebrate the opening of Luxembourg’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).

The concert featured an outstanding performance by the baroque ensemble Artemandoline. The event was attended by HE Mr. Volkan Bozkır, Minister for EU Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Bela Szombati, Chargé d’Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, Ambassadors, diplomats and representatives from the business community.

On this occasion, HE Mrs. Arlette Conzemius, Ambassador of Luxembourg to Turkey, Mr. Bela Szombati and Minister Bozkır delivered speeches focusing on Luxembourg’s Presidency of the Council of the EU and EU-Turkey relations.

Luxembourg will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the 12th time in the second semester of 2015. Over the years, the Luxembourg Presidencies managed to establish a solid reputation for being efficient and successful. As a small, but flexible and dynamic administration, Luxembourg is keen on assuming a role as honest broker, in the best interest of the EU and its partner countries.

The enlargement policy is one of the priorities of the Luxembourg Presidency. Luxembourg supports Turkey’s efforts to become a member of the EU and the Luxembourg Presidency looks forward to opening as many chapters as possible. If all conditions are met, it might be possible to open the chapter 17 on economic and monetary policy before the end of this year. During the next 6 months, at the EU level, Luxembourg will reaffirm its commitment to facilitate the accession negotiations between the EU and Turkey, and has increased the number of invitations to Turkish Ministers to participate in EU informal meetings in Luxembourg. Work will also continue on the visa liberalisation dialogue and preparations for the modernisation of the EU-Turkey Customs Union are also proceeding.
