2020 National Day Remarks by H.E. Mr. Georges FABER, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Turkey

Published Tuesday June 23 2020

Dear Fellow Luxembourgers, Dear Friends of Luxembourg in Turkey, Dear Colleagues,

Today is the 23 June. On this day, we usually celebrate the Luxembourg National Day at our residence together. For reasons known to all of you, it is unfortunately not possible this year. This is why I use the digital means to express my best wishes to all of you, as well as to TT.RR.HH. the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

We are living in turbulent times right now and the need for solidarity, cooperation and friendship among nations is more important than ever. As a founding member of the EU - the most successful peace project ever - and a genuinely multi-national country, where diversity is the norm, Luxembourg has always stood firmly to embrace these values.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that I have decided to donate the equivalent of the total cost of this year´s National Day reception - had it taken place - to the Selam Center in Gaziantep, one of the largest shelters in Turkey run by Syrian refugees for Syrian refugees. Selam Center focuses on the needs of the most vulnerable among the refugee community: children and women. Over the last years, my wife and I have had the opportunity to visit this Center on several occasions and to acknowledge the fantastic work done there by a truly dedicated Syrian family.

As this will also be our last National Day celebration in Ankara, my wife Barbara and I would finally like to seize this opportunity to say goodbye to Turkey and to thank our numerous Turkish friends for their extraordinary hospitality, generosity and friendship over the last 4 years.

We will miss you! Take care and stay safe.

H.E Mr Georges FABER, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Turkey
